YELLOW BELLIED SAPSUCKER
Hook : Daiichi 2051 # 3 - 7
Thread : Uni-Thread 6/0 White
Body : Glow Bug Yarn Chartruese
Wing : Zonker Strip Purple
Collar : Soft Hackle Purple

Fly Tier: Rick Harrington

Tying Instruction :

1) Tie on thread behind eye.
2) With Glow bug yarn make a tapered body the length of the hook shank. This can be done in two ways. First way - chop the yarn up and make a dubbing type material out of it and use a dubbing loop technique to make the body. Then give the body a brush cut with your scissors to the desired shape. Second way - Split the yarn into 1/4 (diameter) and apply it like floss.
3) Tie on a second (red) thread at the base of the body.
4) Tie on the purple zonker strip at the eye of the hook, then pull the rabbit wing tight towards the bend. Separate the rabbit fur above the second tie in point and tie down zonker strip and tie off. This is easier to do if rabbit is dampened slightly, spit works well. Remember to wipe your fingers off before dampening a second time, or borrow fur ball medicine from your cat.
5) Tie on hackle behind hook eye and make 2-3 turns of hackle.
6) Tie off and whip finish head. Use hard as nails for head lacer.

I was born in the Pacific Northwest into a large, close-knit family of wiseasses. My Uncle David (who bears a remarkable semblance to my friend Cooper, the purveyor of this site) started me fishing at five or six, and I became a fly tyer after seeing an Orvis catalog at the neighbors around the

age of nine. I spent more time fishing than studying in college, and have paid for it ever since by pursuing a career in art.
